The New York Times Style section is completely useless for 10 months out of the year, and yet they eliminate The City section–the NEW YORK CITY SECTION of the NEW YORK TIMES!–and possibly other local sections, including Connecticut, Long Island, New Jersey and Westchester. Instead, we have Styles, which gives us articles about how we should “discover” Ann Taylor and Talbots as a “recession destination” (and by the way, to my lone commentor on yesterday’s Daily Beast article about dandy style, who read the piece and took the time to write “I see, and this is news, or relevant commentary how?” did you want me to use the word “recession,” in order to make it “newsworthy”? My friend, self-esteem and Baudelaire are always relevant.)

Also in today’s Thursday Styles, yet another article about Botox, an article about checking voicemail, a woman recounting her experience watching American Idol with her family and an article about a see-through magazine. So, do I echo my own critic with a “I see, and this is news, or relevant commentary how,” and thus place myself in the same company as the Styles section? Do I announce to the world, that, for the betterment of humanity and its news readers, I can only work for two months out of the year as a fashion writer? To avoid looking like a hypocrite, I guess so. Give me the rest of the year to write The City section.
